Word of the Day – Narcissism

Sunday, October 11, 2009 - Word of the Day

I’ve decided to add a new section to my site.  I think it’s pretty obvious what it is.  It might not be a daily thing, but it will definitely be fairly often.  Anyways, about the word…

inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity

This word choice is inspired by someone who truly believes that my world revolves around them and their lack of ability to get on with their life.  While the delusions are highly amusing, it is also a bit annoying.

The word “narcissism” is actually derived from Narcissus, a hero from Greek Mythology.  According to the myths, he was extremely beautiful.  So beautiful, in fact, that most everyone loved him.

There are, as is usually the case with mythology, several different versions of the story, but they all agree that he came upon a still pool and fell in love with his reflection.  In one version, he wastes away because he is unable to leave the beautiful boy in the water.  In another, he realizes that it’s his reflection and kills himself.  There is also an interesting version involving twincest.  :-p

Anyways, while writing this post, I vaguely remembered a song with the title “Narcissist” so I went searching.  I found it and I thought you might enjoy it, so here it is:

The has been high school hero,
He's first in line in his own mind and doesn't care about the rest.
A handsome half wit zero,
He'll be your friend until the end if you're the coolest and the best.

He falls in love with his reflection in the glass,
He can't resist who's staring back.

He makes a case,
That all you've ever needed is a pretty face,
But the bottom line about it is a 'never was' is all he'll ever be.
He can't resist the paranoid delusions of a narcissist.
It doesn't matter anyway 'cause he's a self-fulfilling prophecy,
Of make believe...

She's a suburban princess,
She's had it all since she was small and sucking on a silver spoon.
Another gold card purchase,
This daddy's girl thinks the whole world revolves around her like the moon.

Each day's her film premiere where all the boys will stare,
She pretends she doesn't care.

She makes a case,
That all you've ever needed is a pretty face,
But the bottom line about it is a 'never was' is all she'll ever be.
She can't resist the paranoid delusions of a narcissist.
It doesn't matter anyway 'cause she's a self-fulfilling prophecy,
Of make believe...
Of make believe...
Of make believe...

And on the day he met her,
The high pretension of their love connection all but sealed the deal,
Happily ever after who better for each other than another candidate to...

Make a case
That all you've ever needed is a pretty face,
But the bottom line about it is a 'never was' is all they'll ever be.
They can't resist the paranoid delusions of a narcissist,
But they're together anyway and share their self-obsessed reality.
We can't resist the paranoid delusions of a narcissist,
It doesn't matter anyway 'cause we're all self-fulfilling prophecies.
Of make believe...
Of make believe...
Of make believe...
Of make believe...
