-Love Like Winter-

Sunday, November 29, 2009 - Music

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the biggest AFI fan. Their earlier music was significantly better and laced with that spirited “ass kicking” attitude. Recently, they’ve gotten a bit more mainstream, melodic, and dare i say…emo. They still come out with some great songs every now and then, ‘Love Like Winter’ from DecemberUnderground is a very good example and the video is incredible.
The lyrics are as follows:

Warn your warmth to turn away,
Here it’s December,
Everyday.
Press your lips to the sculptures,
And surely you’ll stay. love like winter
For of sugar and ice,
I am made. I am made
It’s in the blood,
It’s in the blood.
I met my love before I was born.
He wanted love,
I taste of blood.
He bit my lip, and drank my war,
From years before, from years before.
She exhales vanilla lace,
I barely dreamt her, yesterday. yesterday
Read the lines in the mirror through,
The lipstick trace.
Por siempre
She said “It seems you’re somewhere, far away” to his face.
It’s in the blood,
It’s in the blood.
I met my love before I was born.
She wanted love,
I taste of blood.
She bit my lip, and drank my war,
From years before, from years before.
Love Like Winter.
Love Like Winter.
Winter.
Three, four
It’s in the blood,
It’s in the blood.
I met my love before I was born.
He wanted love,
I taste of blood.
He bit my lip, and drank my war,
From years before, from years before.
From years before.

I’ve looked through a few interpretations of this song, including themes like drugs, homosexuality, suicide, and even vampires. My interpretation is that he’s warning potential lovers that he’s reserved and is cold and emotionless, outside and inside. Somebody in a blog had mentioned that Davey (the lead singer) said that he uses “he” in the first chorus to distinguish between two different people, because using the word “she” in both would have been confusing. In my opinion, in the first chorus, he’s reminding himself of his love (essentially, his soulmate) that he’s lost that has put him in this state of emotional winter. After that, he meets another person. Her exhaling vanilla lace is to signify that he’s keeping her out in the cold, purposely. His mentioning that he’d “barely dreamt her yesterday” is talking about how new she is to this entire thing, and she’s surely not stupid, because she realizes that he is cold and distant. Also, the “Por Siempre” (meaning forever) on the mirror reminds him of his soulmate, adding to his being distant towards his new girlfriend/lover. The chorus, “It’s in the blood, it’s in the blood. I met my love before I was born” is sang so confidently and i love that. To me, he’s saying that he already knows that he belongs to somebody, though he’s not with them now. When he says, “He/She wanted love, I taste of blood. He/She bit my lip and drank my war from years before.” is his reminding himself and even his new girlfriend/lover that inside he still loves the person that he’s longing for and he bothers to give the girlfriend/lover a taste of what he feels for his soulmate, they get a taste of it and want more of this, but they’ll never be the person that he belongs to.
