Word of the Day – Catheist

Monday, June 14, 2010 - Word of the Day

An atheist who has no animosity to the Catholic Church and plans to raise his/her children as Catholics until they are old enough to make their own educated decisions regarding their beliefs.

This word is a combination of two words.  The word “Catholic” and the word “atheist.”   Their definitions are listed below respectively:

of the Roman Catholic Church

one who believes that there is no God

How can one justify both beliefs?  Simple.  Believing in the Catholic Church is not equivalent to believing in God.  It is merely a belief in the institution.

Jaime and I are both Catheists and we will raise our children as Catholics until they are old enough to make their own decisions.  It seems a bit contradictory, but part of the reason that Jaime and I are such decent people (no bragging intended) is because of the way we were raised in the Catholic Church.
