Well, I did my rambling autobiography last week and I really enjoyed just writing what came to mind, so I decided to do it again. With a little more focus this time. Just a little more focus, mind you. I’m still planning to ramble! I’m going to try to stick to topics of reading, book reviews, and my reading challenges.
I enjoy writing book reviews. It helps me remember which books I’ve read and what I’ve liked or disliked about each individual book. However, if it wasn’t for my participation in reading challenges, I probably wouldn’t spend any time at all on book reviews. Why? Because I never seem to have time for anything… Take yesterday and today, for instance. Yesterday I was only able to get one review posted, and it wasn’t even completed when I scheduled it. Today I won’t be able to get any up until after because I needed sleep last night. In fact, depending on how I feel after work will actually determine whether or not I post a review.
I’ve been trying to stay on top of my book reviews, and I’m slowly catching up. Finally! Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m going to be able to complete all of my challenges. For example, I haven’t been able to interest myself in any of the Nicholas Sparks books. Not even “The Notebook” and I loved the movie. I have to be in the right mood for that kind of book, and I just haven’t found myself in that mood lately. So, odds are, you’ll see me continuing some of the 2011 reading challenges through 2012. I’m also planning to do fewer challenges for 2012, for obvious reasons. Also, while I probably won’t stick to it, I’m going to try to review a book immediately after reading it next year…
Why won’t I stick to it? Well, I like to read. With my nook, I’ve got hundreds of books at hand. If I finish a book while I’m out and about, I’m more likely to start a new book then and there. On the other hand, I’m planning to get or make a new case for my nook with a special spot for a notepad so that I can take notes for my book reviews so that they’ll be a little more than just a best/worst statement. I won’t lie, I’m disappointed in myself for falling so far behind on reviews that the only way I was able to catch up was to sacrifice quality for quantity, essentially. And while I know that not many people read or visit my site, this site isn’t necessarily for other people to visit, but for me to have my own little place for me.
And the little place that I need is extra memory for my books! I can’t tell you how many books I’ve forgotten the title and author and would love to reread but can’t because I can’t find it! For example, I remember reading a book about a cucumber king living with a family. There was a book about a ghost that lived in a computer – I think the ghost’s name was Pascal (like the computer language), but that’s about all I remember. My site, and Goodreads, is helping me remember all this so that I won’t tell my future kids, “Oh, sweetie, I read this fantastic book about an elf when I was your age, and I absolutely loved it! You would love it! I don’t remember what the book was called, though. Or the author. Whoops, you’re out of luck!”
So, yeah… In case you missed it a minute ago, there may be a book review this afternoon, but in all honesty, don’t count on it. I will almost certainly be passing out in my library after work. I didn’t sleep well last night or the night before and I’m still feeling icky.
